Beyond City Limits - Urban Policy and Economic Reconstructuring in Comparative Perspective

by John Logan, Todd Swanstrom
Paperback: 275 pages
Publisher: Temple University Press (November 13, 1991)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0877229449
ISBN-13: 978-0877229445

Book Description
This book challenges the notion that there is a single, global
process of economic restructuring to which cities must submit.
The studies in this volume compare urban development in the
United States, Western Europe, and Japan, demonstrating that
there is significant variety in urban economic restructuring.
The contributors emphasize that the economic forces transforming
cities from industrial concentrations to post industrial service
centers do not exist apart from politics: all nation-states are
heavily involved in the restructuring process. John R. Logan is
Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at
Albany. Todd Swanstrom is Associate Professor of Political
Science at the State University of New York at Albany and the
author of "The Crisis of Growth Politics: Cleveland, Kucinich,
and the Challenge of Urban Populism (Temple)".

10x10 - 2 100 Architects - New Link

By Editors of Phaidon Press, zaha hadid, toshiko mori, kurt forster, erwin viray, a. campo baeza
Publisher: Phaidon Press
Number Of Pages: 468
Publication Date: 2005-04-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0714844411
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780714844411

Book Description:
Since the release of the critically acclaimed 10x10 five
years ago, the world of architecture has evolved: Advances
in technology and research continue to produce increasingly
sophisticated forms; advances in communication have
resulted in decentralized, multicity architecture offices;
and an impressive crop of young architects is emerging from
countries with comparatively little previous recognition in
the field, such as Slovenia, South Korea, and China. Many of
the architects featured in 10x10— including Asymptote,
Shigeru Ban, and MVRDV—have become established fixtures on
the international scene, opening the way to a new generation
of talent. With the expertise of a highly knowledgeable and
high-powered group of curators, 10x10_2 picks up where its
predecessor left off.
10x10_2 is a comprehensive and global view of new architecture,
presenting the work of 100 up-and-coming architects in 28
countries, selected by 10 of the world’s best-informed
architectural critics. Organized in A–Z order, the book
introduces each architect or studio on four pages that include
photographs, drawings, and accompanying text written by the
critics. Although some of the architects are beginning to gain
worldwide recognition, others have achieved acclaim in their
own countries for their work over the past five years. The
selection in this volume features more than 250 buildings and
projects, including recently built work as well as those
currently under construction and due for completion. The
effects of the global economy and political shifts are also
evident in the book’s selection, which includes several
architecture studios in Slovenia, South Korea, and China.
Also notable is a widespread move toward multi-location
architecture collectives such as Servo, Ocean North, and
n-o-m-a-d, which take advantage of a network of contacts in
key cities around the world.
10x10 _2 also includes 10 original essays written by the
critics that express their views on current architectural
issues. In addition, each critic has chosen 10 cultural
references—from designed objects to film, theory, and
literature—that exemplify the range of influences on today’s
rapidly changing design environment. The complete list of these
references as well as one reading from each critic is reproduced
in the book, which concludes with complete biographical information
on each critic and architect/firm, as well as an index.

Walter Benjamin and the Architecture of Modernity

By Andrew Benjamin, Charles Rice
Publisher: re.press
Number Of Pages: 234
Publication Date: 2009-07-25
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0980544025
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780980544022

Product Description:
Walter Benjamin is universally recognised as one of the key
thinkers of modernity: his writings on politics, language,
literature, media, theology and law have had an incalculable
influence on contemporary thought. Yet the problem of
architecture in and for Benjamin's work remains relatively
underexamined. Does Benjamin's project have an architecture
and, if so, how does this architecture affect the explicit
propositions that he offers us? In what ways are Benjamin's
writings centrally caught up with architectural concerns,
from the redevelopment of major urban centres to the movements
that individuals can make within the new spaces of modern
cities? How can Benjamin's theses help us to understand the
secret architectures of the present? This volume takes up the
architectural challenge in a number of innovative ways,
collecting essays by both well-known and emerging scholars on
time in cinema, the problem of kitsch, the design of graves
and tombs, the orders of road-signs, childhood experience in
modern cities, and much more. Engaged, interdisciplinary,
bristling with insights, the essays in this collection will
constitute an indispensable supplement to the work of Walter
Benjamin, as well as providing a guide to some of the
obscurities of our own present.

Product Description:
Architecture is a powerful medium for representing, ordering
and classifying the world; understanding the use of space is
fundamental to archaeological inquiry. Architecture and Order
draws on the work of archaeologists, social theorists and
architects to explore the way in which people relate to the
architecture which surrounds them. The contributors discuss the
development of an archaeological language used to describe
architecture's symbolic use of space and to further define the
discipline's interaction with not only architecture but also
anthropology. Topics discussed include Neolithic houses and
tombs; perceptions of architecture, space and time; defining
domestic space in the bronze age; women in Greek households;
the Roman domestic setting; Swahili architecture; and spatial
order and psychiatric disorder.

Modern Protective Structures

By Theodor Krauthammer
Publisher: CRC
Number Of Pages: 528
Publication Date: 2008-02-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0824725263
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780824725266
Binding: Hardcover

Book Description:
In today's world, reasonably predictable military operations have
been replaced by low intensity conflicts-less predictable terrorist
activities carried out by determined individuals or small groups
that possess a wide range of backgrounds and capabilities. Because
of the threats posed by this evolving type of warfare, civil
engineers and emergency personnel face new challenges in designing
facilities to protect lives and property and in conducting effective
rescue operations and forensic investigations. Addressing these needs,
Modern Protective Structures develops realistic guidelines for the
analysis, design, assessment, retrofit, and research of protected
facilities. After introducing a comprehensive risk management
approach, the author provides a general background on explosive
devices and their capabilities as well as explosive effects and the
processes that generate them. He then discusses the effects of
conventional and nuclear explosions. The book subsequently considers
the significant design differences between conventional and nuclear
loads and between existing design procedures and state-of-the-art
information from recent research. It also summarizes existing
blast-resistant design approaches and describes the dynamic responses
of structural systems to blasts, shocks, and impacts. Additional
coverage includes the behavior of specific structural connections,
the traditional concept of P-I diagrams, and progressive collapse.
The book concludes with a systematic and balanced protective design
approach. Tackling the analytical, design, assessment, and hazard
mitigation issues associated with short-duration dynamic loads, this
book examines how impulsive loads affect various types of buildings
and facilities. It provides the necessary material to help ensure the
safety of persons, assets, and projects.

You Have to Pay for the Public Life - Selected Essays of Charles W Moore

By Charles W. Moore
Publisher: The MIT Press
Number Of Pages: 432
Publication Date: 2001-04-23
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0262133733
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780262133739

Book Description:
Architect Charles Moore (1925-1993) was not only celebrated
for his designs; he was also an admired writer and teacher.
Though he wrote clearly and passionately about places, he was
perhaps unique in avoiding the tone and stance of the personal
manifesto. Through his buildings, books, and travels, Moore
consistently sought insights into the questions that always
underlie architecture and design: What does it mean to make a
place, and how do we inhabit those places? How do we continue
to build upon but respect the landscape? How do we reconcile
democracy and private land ownership? What is original? What
is taste? What is the relationship between past and present?
How do we involve inhabitants in making places? Finally, what
is public life? As the world becomes smaller, and the
uniqueness of places and landscapes gives way to sameness,
Moore's celebration of the vernacular and of the surprising are
more relevant than ever. The pieces in this book span the years
1952 to 1993 and engage a myriad of topics and movements, such
as contextualism, community participation, collaboration,
environmentally sensitive design, and historic preservation.
The essays in this book reflect as well Moore's scholarship,
humanism, urbanity, and great wit.

The Drive-In, the Supermarket, and the Transformation of Commercial Space in Los Angeles, 1914-1941

By Richard Longstreth
Publisher: The MIT Press
Number Of Pages: 266
Publication Date: 1999-04-30
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0262122146
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780262122146

bOOK Description:
Richard Longstreth is one of the few historians to focus on
ordinary commercial buildings--buildings usually associated
with commercial builders and real estate developers rather
than architects and thus generally overlooked by historians
of "high" architecture. Here Longstreth explores the early
development of two kinds of retail space that have become
ubiquitous in the United States in the second half of the
twentieth century. One, external, is devoted to the
circulation and parking of automobiles on retail premises.
Longstreth analyzes the origins of this development in the
1910s and 1920s, with the super service station and then the
drive-in market. The other type of space, internal, was
introduced soon thereafter with the single-story supermarket.
The most innovative aspect of the supermarket was how its
interior was designed for high-volume turnover of a large
selection of goods with a minimum of staff assistance.
Longstreth focuses on Los Angeles, the principal center for
the development of both kinds of space, during the period
from the mid-1910s to the early 1940s. This richly
illustrated study integrates architectural, cultural,
economic, and urban factors to describe the evolution of
retailing and how it has affected the urban landscape.

Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design - Cultural Process and Environmental Response

By Kingston Wm. Heath Ph.D.
Publisher: Architectural Press
Number Of Pages: 216
Publication Date: 2009-04-29
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0750659335
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780750659338

Product Description:
A governing principle of sustainable architecture is that
buildings need to reflect upon and respond to the environment
they are placed in. Through a series of international case
studies, Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design
re-examines vernacular architectural theory and looks at what
gives buildings a sense of place. The book equips the
professional architect with the tools to realise socially
responsible principles as part of the design process. The case
studies of contemporary architects' work provide real examples
of how the study of vernacular architecture can contribute
directly to practice in sustainable design. It considers
architecture and design as integrated social processes, not
just technical or aesthetic exercises, thus showing how local
building traditions can become part of a wider architectural
and social fabric. Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design
will appeal to professionals around the world in the fields of
architecture, architectural heritage and urban design.
* A series of international case studies demonstrates the place
of vernacular architecture in the design process for a wide
selection of contemporary architects' work.
* Offers a clear analysis of the vernacular building tradition,
placing architecture in its social context.
* Introduces a new, socially and environmentally inspired
approach to sustainable design.

Architecture from the Outside - Essays on Virtual and Real Space

By Elizabeth Grosz
Publisher: The MIT Press
Number Of Pages: 241
Publication Date: 2001-06-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0262571498
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780262571494

Book Description:
To be outside allows one a fresh perspective on the inside.
In these essays, philosopher Elizabeth Grosz explores the
ways in which two disciplines that are fundamentally outside
each another--architecture and philosophy--can meet in a third
space to interact free of their internal constraints. "Outside"
also refers to those whose voices are not usually heard in
architectural discourse but who inhabit its space--the destitute,
the homeless, the sick, and the dying, as well as women and
minorities. Grosz asks how we can understand space differently in
order to structure and inhabit our living arrangements accordingly.
Two themes run throughout the book: temporal flow and sexual
specificity. Grosz argues that time, change, and emergence,
traditionally viewed as outside the concerns of space, must become
more integral to the processes of design and construction. She also
argues against architecture’s historical indifference to sexual
specificity, asking what the existence of (at least) two sexes has
to do with how we understand and experience space. Drawing on the
work of such philosophers as Henri Bergson, Roger Caillois, Gilles
Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Luce Irigaray, and Jacques Lacan, Grosz
raises abstract but nonformalistic questions about space,
inhabitation, and building. All of the essays propose philosophical
experiments to render space and building more mobile and dynamic.
